Phalaborwa [referred to as
the town with two summers]
is situated in the heart of the
Valley of the Olifants River, an
area rich in wildlife, scenery,
mountains, rivers and cultural
attractions.
Phalaborwa is situated less than
2 km from the Kruger
National Park Gate, the
world's most famous nature
reserve. Daily tours to the
Kruger National Park depart from
Phalaborwa, and river cruises,
micro-light flying and 4x4 game
drives in private game reserves
are also on offer.
The Modjadji Cycad
Reserve, home to
Mojadji, the Rain Queen, is in
close proximity and so too is
Thohoyandou,
capitol of the Venda region, the
land of the legend with sacred
lakes and baobab trees. The
picturesque town of
Haenertsburg, that was
established in 1887 as a gold
rush community, lies in the
foothills of the majestic
Drakensberg.
Other places of interest
include Tzaneen,
the centre of the Letaba
district, also referred to as
the winter fruit basket of the
Limpopo Province,
Magoebaskloof, with
it's spectacular scenery of
mountains and waterfalls and
Pilgrim's Rest,
which is home to the living
museum that reflects the gold
rush of the 1880's.
The discerning traveler can
also visit Potgietersrus
[Mokopane], named after
Piet Potgieter, the voortrekker
killed in the siege of the
Makapansgat Caves, The
African Ivory Route,
which has it's origins in the
exploits of early ivory hunters,
The Timbavati Game
Reserve with it's
famous white lions and
Bourke's Luck Potholes,
named after Tom Bourke who
discovered gold in the area.
Gods Window,
on the edge of the escarpment,
offers magnificent views across
the Blyde River Canyon, Sabi and
Graskop area. Sabi Sand
